Bahrain Mirror: The European Union stated that the four-year jail sentence handed down to Bahrain's opposition leader and the Secretary-General of Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, Sheikh Ali Salman, "runs counter to efforts promoting a lasting and inclusive national reconciliation in Bahrain."
In a statement released on Wednesday (June 17, 2015), the EU expressed hope for the reconsideration of a four-year jail sentence against Sheikh Salman by an appeal court "in a fair and transparent manner, in full respect of Bahrain's international obligations."
"A sustainable political process leading to gradual and inclusive reform requires an environment where legitimate and peaceful grievances can be expressed freely. The release of those arrested in the context of peaceful political activities would also be an important signal in this regard," the statement further read.
