Bahrain Mirror: Bahrain's main opposition group Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, marking International Day of Non-Violence, said (October 2, 2015) that it is committed to a peaceful approach as its peaceful strategic choice and to the peaceful and popular movement that was launched in February 2011 and still continues to demand establishing a modern democratic state based on justice, equality and the respect of human rights.

On the International Day of Non-Violence, the Al-Wefaq highlighted that the "Declaration of Non-Violence Principles" issued by the Bahraini opposition societies on November 7, 2012, is the first document issued by opposition parties worldwide. The opposition based this declaration on UN and international principles for establishing the culture of peace and non-violence.

The Al-Wefaq reiterated the opposition societies' call, demanding the authorities to adopt the declaration, stressing that the leaderships that urged and called for signing this significant historic and strategic document are now being detained over charges that international organizations and the Bahraini society see as false and completely contradict with their approach and goals. The national figure Sheikh Ali Salman is the the leader of the non-violence declaration. It is noteworthy that the international organizations and Bahraini community deem Salman's charges void. International organizations and observers also expressed their opposition to the charges brought against Sheikh Ali Salman.

Al-Wefaq stressed that the movement in Bahrain was distinguished for its peacefulness and non-violence. Peacefulness formed the main characteristic of this movement. The movement is still committed to its peacefulness despite the harsh security measures taken against it.

Al-Wefaq also called on the authorities not to use any violent methods like excessive use of force, as well as arbitrary arrests , night raids, and trials that lack standards of justice, in addition to preventing freedom of expression, assembly and political activism, demanding them to adhere to the international treaties, international law, articles of the Constitution and local legislations in this regard.

The Al-Wefaq further highlighted that the authorities should allow that the national parties to emphasize non-violence in the political movement instead of arresting the leaders that work day in and day out on maintaining the peacefulness of the movement and bringing void charges against them, such as Al-Wefaq's senior members Majeed Milad and Sheikh Hassan Isa as well as Wa'ad Society's former Secretary-General, Ebrahim Sharif, and other figures, activists and youths.
