Taxi Drivers Threaten to Go on Strike: Keeping Sector Open for Illegal Competition Will Affect 6000 Citizens

Bahrain Mirror: A group of taxi drivers from the Public Transport Drivers Society (PTDS) have threatened to go on a strike for a day if the authorities continue to ignore their demands.

The society leaders said in a press conference on Wednesday (October 7, 2015) that the number of taxi drivers in Bahrain exceeds 1,000 who offer services for about 6,000 citizens. They added that keeping the sector open for "influential people" will affect the citizens first and will lead to social and economic imbalances.

The head of PTDS said that the society has complained about the unfair illegal competition due to the unlawful workforce and it was surprised to see that the work of this group has been organized in a way that opens the door for what can be described as organized theft, stressing that this represents a clear constitutional violation.

The attendees said that they will address the Minister of Interior, Rashid bin Abdllah Al Khalifa, to hold a meeting with the society representatives and take the situation of taxi drivers into consideration.
