Bahrain Mirror: A Bahraini court handed down a 2-year prison term to a member of the main opposition group Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, Majeed Milad, on Wednesday (November 11, 2015) for "inciting non-compliance with the law".

The Bahraini authorities have been detaining Majeed Milad since July 2 over his participation in a public seminar.

Majeed Milad was elected in general elections before being chosen in 2010 as chairman of the capital's municipal council, and was assigned by the Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society to participate in the dialogue with the authority, that ended with failure.

The Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society stressed that the trial of Milad is a trial of conscience. It reflects the absence of any freedom of opinion and expression.

The regime in Bahrain has closed the doors of development, dialogue and negotiation and kept its prison doors open to receive more political dissidents, signaling no desire for settlement, Al-Wefaq added.

Al Wefaq further stressed that the ongoing escalation of suppression is a costly decision and will bring nothing but failure to the nation. The majority of Bahrainis will continue to voice their legitimate demands for democracy until they are met.

Al Wefaq demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Milad and the thousands of political prisoners in Bahraini prisons. This is apparent evidence that the situation is not normal as some try to promote otherwise with meaningless slogans.

Four years after the report of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI), more dissidents are being locked up. Al Wefaq deemed Majeed Milad a prisoner of conscience. The international community is called upon to take a clear stance against the suppression of freedoms in Bahrain.
