Terrorist Crimes Prosecution: Life Imprisonment Handed down to 3 Suspects over Al-Dair Bombing

Bahrain Mirror: The Chief of Bahrain's Terrorist Crime Prosecution the attorney-general Ahmad Al-Hammadi said that Bahrain's First High Criminal Court sentenced on Thursday (January 7, 2016) three suspects to life imprisonment over attempted murder of policemen, attempting to blow up explosives and possessing and manufacturing explosives for terrorist purposes.
The authorities claim that the suspects had planted explosives in the village of Al-Dair on December 29, 2014 and gathered beside it in order to lure the policemen and blow it up when they arrive. They further added that when the policemen arrived one of them noticed its presence, so they moved away and deactivated the bomb.
The Public Prosecution based its charges raised against them on anecdotal evidence including witnesses and "technical evidence" and referred all of the suspects, including two detained, to the First High Criminal Court, with an order to apprehend the suspect at large.
Human rights organizations challenge the charges raised against the suspects since they doubt the independence of the judiciary, whose members are assigned by royal decrees, and since it issues sentences based on confessions extracted under duress and evidence presented by secret investigations and anonymous witnesses.
