Thousands of Bahrainis Protest Petrol Price Hike & Reiterate Call for Elected Gov’t

2016-01-17 - 12:15 am

Bahrain Mirror (Exclusive): Thousands of Bahrainis took to the streets on Friday (January 15, 2016) to express their opposition to the government policy of lifting subsidies on the basic commodities and services and depriving the families of political prisoners from social assistance. The government decided earlier this week to lift subsidies on fuel and stop paying due amounts of money to the detainees who were arrested on political backgrounds.

The protestors considered that the new policies are a natural consequence of the theft and corruption the government is suffering from, adding that a democratic transition of power and the election of a popular government will achieve a rational governance of the country's resources. The pro-democracy demonstrators held photos of the opposition leader and Secretary-General of Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, Sheikh Ali Salman, who is serving a 4-year jail term and demanded his immediate release, stressing on their adherence to the demands of February 14 uprising.
