Bahrain Mirror: The International Center for Supporting Rights and Freedoms (ICSRF) urged the King of Bahrain Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to issue pardon to the opposition leader and Secretary-General of Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, Sheikh Ali Salman, deeming the toughened sentence "very concerning".
The ICSRF stressed, in a statement issued on Monday (May 30, 2016), that Sheikh Salman is a prisoner of conscience, deprived of his right to a fair trial, which constitutes a blatant violation of international law.
The rights center further highlighted that since the onset of Salman's trial, his lawyers have complained about preventing them to make their defense, present evidence and speak to refute the accusations raised against their client.
Concluding its statement, the ICSRF called on the Bahraini authorities to put an end to all forms of legal and legislative prosecution against human rights defenders, and guarantee the rights of activists to practice their activism, in accordance with international treaties and conventions.
