ICSRF Fears Ongoing Harassment of Human Rights Defenders in Bahrain

2016-08-17 - 8:55 p

Bahrain Mirror: The International Centre for Supporting Rights and Freedoms (ICSRF) said that the emotions of fear, terror, concern and insecurity have afflicted dissent and human rights defenders in Bahrain, over their expression of their opinion and practice of their human rights work.

In a statement, the ICSRF referred to the interrogation of the head of Religious Freedoms Department at the Bahrain Human Rights Observatory, Sheikh Maytham Al-Salman, over his human rights activism, noting that Al-Salman is an internationally respected interfaith leader and human rights advocate, whose work focuses on promoting tolerance and countering hate speech. The Centre also highlighted that Sheikh Al-Salman was honoured for his work with the Interfaith Communities for Justice and Peace "Advocate for Peace" award in 2015.

The Centre further voiced its solidarity with Al-Salman and all human rights defenders in Bahrain, also calling on the Bahraini authorities to put an end to the harassment of rights defenders and activists to improve human rights in the island kingdom.
