Bahrain Mirror: Hundreds of Bahrainis took to the streets in different areas across Bahrain on Monday (August 14, 2017) to commemorate the country's independence from the British, renewing their demand to put an end to the Al Khalifa family's monopoly of power.
The protesters stressed that the reopening of a British naval base in Bahrain (November 2016) confirms that the ruling family wants to sell Bahrain to Britain again.
In a statement yesterday, the parties of the Democratic Movement celebrated the anniversary of independence, calling for a dialogue to end the political unrest in the country and make the island kingdom steer clear from regional tensions.
In Sitra, angry protesters clashed with government forces, who cracked down on the demonstrators using tear gas and rubber bullets in an attempt to disperse them.
The ruling family and its supporters do not celebrate this occasion, but rather celebrate the anniversary of the King's inauguration on December the 16th and 17th.
