Bahrain Mirror: The Sixth High Appeals Court upheld sentencing 3 appellants to life in prison. The suspects are accused of attempted murder of 2 officers and 2 other policemen in Diraz, after alluring the policemen to a place where they planted a locally made bomb.
The first-instance court had sentenced 6 out of 8 suspects in the case to life in prison, and sentenced one of them to 3 years in prison and 2000 BD fine for acquiring ammunition in addition to the life-term verdict he received. Meanwhile, the court acquitted the 2 other suspects of the charges brought against them.
The court bound the 6 suspects to pay 1551 BD for the damages they caused to a security patrol owned by the interior ministry and ordered the confiscation of seized items.
The authorities claim that the suspects from the first till the sixth decided on 12/2/2016 to kill any policeman through targeting them with an bomb and that the sixth suspect, who lives outside Bahrain, contacted the first suspect and urged him to make the blast operation and asked him to deal with other trustworthy people.
The authorities allege that the fifth suspect could allure the policemen through attacking them with Molotov and metal rods. As soon as the patrol approached, the third suspect blasted the planted bomb using a remote controller, which led to damages in the vehicle.
The authorities say that they reached the suspects through investigations.
Human rights organizations challenge the charges raised against political detainees, since they doubt the independence of the judiciary, whose members are assigned by royal decrees, and since it issues sentences based on confessions extracted under duress and evidence presented by secret investigations and anonymous witnesses.
