Bahrain Mirror: The Fifth High Criminal Court of Appeals in Bahrain ruled against the deportation penalty of an Asian national, upholding a one-month prison term against him over charges of refusing to provide relief to a victim in a crime of assault leading to permanent disability.
Attorney Maha Mohsen Jaber said her client (the defendant) was impatiently waiting for this verdict after spending 17 months on remand. At every hearing we demanded his release but his pre-trial detention was continuously renewed.
The charges are based on the fact that the defendant witnessed an assault on a person and did not intervene to save him, although there were many people who were watching the incident from the balconies of the surrounding houses. He was brought to trial and spent 15 months in trial before the Court of First Instance, and about two months before the Appeals Court, until he was sentenced to one month in prison, i.e. after he had spent 17 months of detention on remand.
The Public Prosecution accused the defendant and others abstained without excuse from helping a victim of assault, which led to permanent disability, on 1/10/2016 and referred the said defendant and the other defendants to trial.
