Bahrain Mirror: Legal advisor for Bahrain Center for Human Rights Ibrahim Serhan announced that "number of people convicted to death in Bahrain reached 22, 4 of whom are sentenced to final verdict, and 4 others have received commuted sentences to life in jail".
The conference urged the government of Bahrain to abolish implementing this punishment, even if stipulated by laws, like countries that follow this approach.
This announcement came during a press conference organized by Bahrain Center for Human Rights with the participation of Maharat Foundation, on the World Day Against the Death Penalty.
The conference, held on Wednesday (October 10, 2018), focused on death penalty in Bahraini laws and legislations as well as judicial verdicts in civil and military judiciary.
Serhan said "after communicating with families of detainees in Jaw prison, it was noticed the treatment of the jailers is very bad and falls short of international human Rights laws."
Hussein Al-Sharif, representative of Maharat Foundation, explained that "following the amendment of article 105 of the Constitution in 2017, the military Justice Law was amended, granting powers to the military courts to issue sentences against civilians, which led to increased death sentences in Bahrain."
Both of Serhan and Sharif indicated that Bahraini laws contain more than 83 articles on death penalty.
