Bahrain Mirror: The Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR) issued a statement following the death of inmate Abbas Hasan Malallah (50) in Jaw Central Prison.

The Center stated that Malallah is the 48th prisoner to die following 47 other political prisoners who have died in prisons in Bahrain since 2011.

In its statement, BCHR demanded the release of prisoners who were arrested over charges related to the political and human rights situation in Bahrain since 2011, calling for opening an impartial and independent investigation into the death of Abbas Malallah, and holding those whose involvement is proven accountable. The Center also urged providing the prisoners with the necessary health care, allowing families of prisoners to always have contact with their family members in order to check on their health, adhering to the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, known as the "Nelson Mandela Rules", and adopting strict health standards amid the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

The statement included details on what martyr Malallah went through from the moment he was arrested until his trial in a military court where he was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. BCHR noted that the former head of Bahrain Center for Human Rights had stated, through his Twitter account, that he Malallah was brought to court, while being carried, unable to walk as a result of the torture he was subjected to after his arrest.

He added that in a move that violated the principle of individual punishment, the Ministry of Housing withdrew the housing unit that was allocated to his family after he was sentenced, despite his family's continuous attempt to obtain the unit that was intended for them.
