Bahrain Mirror (AFP): The United Nations General Assembly on Friday confirmed by vote the appointment of Michelle Bachelet, Chile's twice-serving president, as the world body's next human rights chief, which was announced on Wednesday.
Bachelet, 66, is set to replace Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein of Jordan, a sharp critic of US President Donald Trump's policies, who held the post of UN high commissioner for human rights since September 2014.
"Bachelet will face a world of rising hate and inequality as the newly-appointed UN human rights chief," UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Friday.
Speaking to reporters, Guterres praised Bachelet as "perfectly suited" for the job but warned she takes office "at a time of grave consequence for human rights" in the world.
