Bahrain Mirror: The Bahraini authorities have once again arrested Ibrahim Sharif, the former secretary-general of the Wa'ad Society and a prominent figure in the opposition, and decided to detain him for 7 days pending investigation, based on posts on the formerly Twitter "X" platform, where he criticized the irresponsible spending on McLaren at the expense of government projects and services such as health and housing.
The Public Prosecution had summoned Sharif for interrogation on the morning of Monday, March 25, 2024, and issued an order to detain him for 7 days pending investigation.
Women's rights and public affairs activist in Bahrain, Farida Ghulam, said in a post on "X" on Monday that "the charges against Sharif by the Public Prosecution were based on his recent tweets about the McLaren company and the budgets injected into it without accountability, in contrast to the budget for housing projects and the needs of citizens, as well as the tweet about the fire in a crowded house in Sitra inhabited by 17 individuals from 4 Bahraini families."
On December 20, 2023, the authorities arrested Sharif after he questioned, in posts on the "X" platform, "why the unelected Bahraini government presented itself as a legal "analyst" for the American-led coalition to lift the blockade imposed by Yemen on the ports of the Zionist entity, without any consideration for the stance of the Bahraini people, who strongly support our besieged Palestinian people being massacred in Gaza."
The Public Prosecution decided, at that time, to detain him for 7 days pending investigation, based on his rejection of Bahrain joining the "maritime alliance" led by the United States against Yemen, and his solidarity with Gaza.
